Texas Legato – Lampasas, Texas

If you think you’re seeing double after visiting the other winery just up the road, it’s not because of too much wine tasting.  The twin brother of Pillar Bluff Vineyards’ owner has his own place.  In addition to great Cabernets is a wonderful Malbec.  The Petite Syrah is especially noteworthy and was one of our favorites.  The Sojourn has got to be one of the best port style wines that should be enjoyed with not only your sweetie but some of their port filled chocolate too!  While you’re at it, throw in some goat cheese with the rest of these wines and you’ll be the envy of any wine tasting party.

Pillar Bluff Vineyards – Lampasas, Texas

Over the river, past the golf course, and through the woods is a winery filled with quality red wine.  From Cabs, to Merlots, to Bordeaux style blends, you can’t go wrong with any of their selections. Pillar Bluffs also makes a great Viognier that is worth the drive. When you’re done wine tasting here, you can simply hop on over to the “twin” winery just down the road, (three lefts will take you right to it) to Texas Legato.   Good wineries sometimes come in pairs!

Woodrose Winery – Stonewall, Texas

Located outside of Fredericksburg along the pleasant Hill Country U.S. 290 highway is an inviting winery where one can enjoy a glass of wine under the many beautiful Central Texas oak trees.  With a quality selection of reds and whites, there is notably a fine selection of many Merlots vintages.  If you can’t find the right Merlot year for you, try mixing different vintages.   Much can also be said about their selection of Cabernet Sauvignons.  One will find the Lone Barrel Reserve among the more unique selections available, but hurry.  It was an especially wonderful blend.  This unplanned Merlot/Tempranillo blend may be sold out well before the next deer season and it may never return!

Cabernet Franc – 2003; Fawncrest Vineyards; Canyon Lake, Texas

This well aged Cabernet Franc tastes wonderful!  Time has done justice to this bottle of wine.  With a pleasant bouquet and a smooth flavor, this wine would be an excellent compliment to your favorite pasta dish or plate of cheese. The color is also stunning for Valentines’ Day with a lovely warm magenta hue. Cheers!

Rancho Ponte Vineyard – Fredericksburg, Texas

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country, Rancho Ponte Vineyard can be an ideal place to spend the afternoon with your favorite wine.  This place is one of the more recently opened wineries of the growing Texas wine industry.  You can’t go wrong with any of their fine reds or whites.  You’ll surely find a crisp, rich, full bodied or soothing wine that meets your taste.  And after a long day and big meal, you should have the Renegade Zinfandel Port to end the day!
