As
a nod to Eddie Bingham (family grandfather), this light sweet red wine is
certainly a smooth one to have. The
translucent red color and fruity aromas are a delight to enjoy. Both the notes
and flavors are mostly raspberries with some pomegranate in there, too. Swirl
it around a bit and you just might pick up on hints of pecan, as well. This red
wine blend has a slight smoky finish to it followed by that happy smile. A very pleasing dessert wine, indeed. Cheers!
Wine Of The Moment is just that. A moment of trying out a new bottle of wine and sharing our thoughts and impressions. There is no planned wine bottle that is to be opened or set time that it will be tasted. It is what ever just happens to be opened...for the moment. On occasion, we may also post our feedback on new wineries that we have visited as well as unique cheeses. So, pull up your own plate of cheese, crackers, and fruit and enjoy these discussions.

Montepulciano – 2017; Ab Astris Winery; Stonewall, Texas
When
cherry and raspberry aromas greet your nose, what’s not to like? This Montepulciano
wine was crafted with Reddy Vineyards fruit sourced from the Texas High Plains
AVA and has a light ruby red hue to it to gaze at. As you begin pouring this
delightful bottle, you will also note the scent of cranberry accompanying the
cherry and raspberry notes. This beauty has a very dry texture and delights
with additional notes of blueberry. The acidity is quite good with some smoke
and cocoa for an added surprise. This wine is drinking nicely and is quite
smooth with a light herbal finish. Pretty good for this Texas 2017 vintage. Salute!

7 Deadly Red – 2018; 7 Deadly Wines; Livermore, California
Sourced from Lodi AVA, the deep ruby color of this wine is the first stage of your sensory enjoyment. The 2018 vintage is a blend of 33% Zinfandel, 31% Petite Sirah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot with a 1% mix of “others”. There are a lot of layers of fruit profile in this one. Notably, cherry and plums will come out to great your nose along with some leather. There is a bit of cocoa in there just to add a little bit of surprise, too. The wine has equally pleasing fruit flavor as well with mostly blackberry hitting all your senses. After that first sip, there is a slight peppery finish to this light tannin jewel. Enjoy well!

Merlot – 2007; Meerlust Estate; Stellenbosch, South Africa
Well,
the back of the label said it could cellar for 15 years and sure enough, this
South African Merlot is still holding up quite well. Made from 25+ year old
vines, this Stellenbosch Merlot has 14% Cabernet Franc which gives it a touch
of complexity. Give it a good hour or so to unfold, then breathe in those
blackberry and plum notes. The color is intact and still mostly ruby red with some
browning. It still has good acidity, an earthy feel, and lingering vanilla to
tease you for another sip. Chocolate and
leather will also round out the flavor profile followed by some smooth
tannins. You will be quite impressed
with this one if you have a bottle or two. If the newer wines are akin to this,
then you know that you will have a fantastic jewel to enjoy that can cellar for
at least 15 years. Cheers!

RE:Rooted 210 – San Antonio, Texas
Located in the Hemisphere Park area of San Antonio, Re:Rooted elevates the experience of what an urban wine bar should be. This has been a dream in the making for Jennifer Beckmann, who has been planning this winery since 2017. Not only is she a fantastic Sommelier, but practically a natural at educating people on wine experiences. Many long time Texas wine fans will recognize Jennifer from her professional Texas resume: from her initial days at Perissos, to Bending Branch, to Kuhlman, and finally Slate Mill before she jumped into her own lane. Re:Rooted not only brings to life that decade of Texas winery experience, but her previous professional experiences and more importantly…passion for great wine. The wine bar name relates to quite literally re-rooting her wines and business plans here as well as the area code of San Antonio. After covid related delays, Jennifer was finally able to open in February of 2021. Re:Rooted focuses on wines on tap to enjoy by the glass or growler. Growler and not by the bottle? Why, yes! Instead of straight from aging to bottling, wine is stored in petainer kegs where it can then be poured into a glass or used to fill up a growler and take home and then reuse – like the locals do things in Europe. Not only is there no difference in quality, but it certainly saves a great deal of waste and time associated with bottling. Jennifer oversees and drives the Re:Rooted label brand and blending that is made from 100% Texas grapes. She works with some of the Hill Country and High Plains partners for crushing, fermentation, aging and blending. The modern industrial style decor for this 2000+ square feet site is amazing. With the cool repurposed aircraft fixtures that artistically became modern art light fixtures, along with the high ceilings and concrete floors, the vibe here is nothing less than spectacular. In addition to the Re:Rooted wines, there are also a number of Texas wines featured that enables one to experience what’s “out there”. So, what are Re:Rooted wines like? For the whites, the tasting menu starts with the 2019 Cable Car. Named after the days when there were cable cars at Hemisphere Park, this white blend of 55% Roussanne and 45% Viognier embraces you with peach and jasmine aromas and bright acidity. The 2020 Roussanne has bit of a lemon zest with a touch of vanilla. For the reds, the 2019 Mourvèdre has a “Pinot Noir” feel to it and is very fruit forward with raspberries and good minerality. The 2019 Cinco Colmillos (bottled) is a brand featuring 5 varieties. The 2019 vintage has 35% Carignan, 30% Syrah, 14% Mourvedre, 11% Counoise, and 10% Grenache. It has big fruit on the nose, great acidity, and a bit of peppercorn, too. The unique artwork on this label is fantastic, as well. The Riverwalk is a non-vintage easy sipper that will vary annually in its composition. This “year’s” has 86% Tempranillo (a Texas 2017), 11% Sangiovese, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is big on black cherries along with some delightful cocoa notes. A 2018 Malbec should be arriving on the menu soon along with an Aglianco. Check back frequently to see how the line-up and the blends change…and consider the growler program! Location, location, location can be everything. Not only does this wine bar have a great location for traffic, but an ideal location to help introduce visitors to the city and state, on what Texas has to offer in wonderful wines. If you want to venture out to the Texas wine country and experience more, Jennifer can provide suggestions as well. Had a less than stellar experience with a Texas wine? Jennifer will help reset that bar and direct you into a far better experience, providing you with a positive, fun, and educational tasting. We look forward to coming back for more great wine, fun, and enjoyment in future trips to Re:Rooted and San Antonio. Viva la Re:Rooted and cheers!

Euphoria – 2018; Heath Sparkling Wines; Fredericksburg, Texas
This
lovely sparkling blend of 75% Chenin Blanc and 25% Trebbiano is a refreshing
treat. With a pale straw color and moderate bubbles, the first sensations to
delight the senses are floral aromas and peaches. On the palate, one discerns a
bit of melon mingling with banana to tease and tempt. The abundant bubbles and
mild creaminess texture are pleasant, as well. On the finish, are lingering
notes of honeysuckle before that crisp feel kicks in. A wonderfully bubbly for the change in
seasons and a great way to euphorically express the joy in spring. Cheers!

Cavendish – 2013; Ridgeview Wine Estate; Sussex, United Kingdom
This
English brut of 40% Pinot Meunier, 34% Chardonnay, 26% Pinot Noir is an
excellent bubbly for your celebratory affairs and just because you deserve it
days. This sparkler has a light straw
yellow color and a bit of a zesty ripe citrus aroma. One can also discern toast
and lingering faint cherries on the palate. The sugars and acids balance out
quite nicely for this medium bodied sparkling.
The fine bubbles are as enticing to watch as they are to sip for this lovely
brut. At 9 years, it is holding up quite
nicely. A great find and a very
enjoyable sipper. We thoroughly enjoyed this delightful bottle. Cheers!

Syrah – NV; Longhorn Cellars; Fredericksburg, Texas
Sourced
from the Texas High Plains AVA, this Syrah wine makes for an excellent meat pairing
to compliment your meal. With 25% Petite Sirah mixed in, that first pour will
greet your dinner table with notes of cherry, pepper, and bit of leather. Taking
that first sip, you’ll experience the medium acids and tannins and the flavors
of plum. This bottle has a great finish
of vanilla and lingering tobacco, as well.
A great wine to accompany our meal. Enjoy this one well!

Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve – 2017; Becker Vineyards; Fredericksburg, Texas
With
a mix of fruit from the Texas High Plains and Hill Country, the best of both
AVAs comes alive in this reserve Cabernet. This wine also includes just a bit
of Cabernet Franc and Tannat in this French aged oak jewel. Black cherries and leather are on the nose
followed by some white pepper. The vanilla and hints of coffee certainly
delight the palate with firm tannins rounding out the flavor profile. The acids are holding at a strong moderate,
as well. Mark this one as another
fantastic renowned 2017 Texas vintage and a great compliment to their 25th
anniversary. You can probably still hold
for a few more years for added enjoyment. Cheer!

Marsanne – 2019; Bingham Family Vineyards; Fredericksburg, Texas
This
Texas High Plains fruit is an excellent summer sipper! With just the right
floral notes, you can see why it was a winner at the 2021 San Francisco
Chronicle International Wine Competition.
This lovely white wine features a hint of pear in the air to help savor
the moment and flavors of lemon and pineapple on the palate along with some
apple. The slight creaminess sensation around the mouth is an added delight, as
well. Have fun with this one and pair with food or simply enjoy on its own. A
beauty!
