There’s
something about Mason County fruit that really stands out well. Sourced from
Tallant Vineyards, this four-year-old red wine jewel is rich in cranberry notes
and still fruit forward. You will discern some cherries as well along with a
touch of cinnamon. It has moderate tannins with medium acidity along with a
smooth finish. This Mason Tempranillo was under the Texas Hill Country AVA when
released but this region is now eagerly looking forward to future Hickory Sands
AVA designation coming to Mason and the surrounding nearby vineyards in the
future. Cheers!
Wine Of The Moment is just that. A moment of trying out a new bottle of wine and sharing our thoughts and impressions. There is no planned wine bottle that is to be opened or set time that it will be tasted. It is what ever just happens to be opened...for the moment. On occasion, we may also post our feedback on new wineries that we have visited as well as unique cheeses. So, pull up your own plate of cheese, crackers, and fruit and enjoy these discussions.

Airis'Ele Vineyards – Fredericksburg, Texas
Having
been opened since 2022, this new winery on HWY 290 is a must add to your
regular Hill Country wine trekking trips. Founded by
the Bernard and Perrenoud families, this new adventure for the 12-acre
estate has really gotten off to a great start. Chris Perrenoud has a long-time
history in the Fredericksburg area and helped get her husband Brett hooked on
the Texas wine bug. Both Chris and Brett worked at Becker Vineyards for a long
time, so they have certainly seen many changes to the ever-expanding Texas wine
industry. John and Susie Bernard have had a long time community involvement in
the area. Having established their own careers, this next adventure into the
Texas wine world is the next chapter of their careers. The name of the winery
comes from the blending of John Bernard’s side of the family and Chris Perrenoud’s
maiden name. There is a great story regarding why the name begins with “A”, but
you should pay a visit to find out more. The lovely name isn’t difficult to
pronounce once you hear it. The symbol comes from some Axis deer antlers that Bret’s dad found on the
property. The antlers were both found on different parts of the property and just
happened to match up. They represent the two families working together as well
as how grape vines are pruned back for future growth. Once an old farm ranch house,
the owners have added on to the 20th century home turning it into a
fantastic tasting room with scenic views of large oak trees in the backyard
area and great artwork on the walls. You can see the original rock wall from
the back porch as you admire the lovely scenery. John Bernard’s acoustic guitar
collection has also found a special place in the tasting room to help elevate
the décor. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating and an exquisite upstairs private
tasting room overlooking the main downstairs tasting room with an even better
view of the outdoor area too.
Michael
Barton, from Hilmy Cellars, is helping the owners with the winemaking. There are plans to add a production facility
on site as well as estate vines. They currently have several great wines to
select from that you can’t go wrong with. Most grapes are sourced from the
Texas High Plains. You’ll also notice some wines from the Columbia Valley area
which will give you a great comparison with the Texas wine equivalent. You will notice a three-word descriptor for
each wine. This is Bret’s take on how
best to describe how enjoyable each wine is to drink. A little bit of
everything and then some was tried on this visit. First to start off with was
the NV Dry Bienvenue. Sourced from Wilmeth Vineyards of the Texas High Plains
AVA, this fizzy jewel is a blend of 55% Roussanne, 25% Riesling, and 20%
Viognier. Along with the lively bubbles, are some great minerality and buttery
notes. The next white was a 2019 Viognier from Lahey Vineyards. This big Texas
white wine has great acids and tropical notes to add to that lush feeling. For
the Rosé wine, they have the 2021 Redlin sourced from Farmhouse Vineyards. This
blend of 40% Cinsault, 20% Montepulciano, 20% Sangiovese, 15% Mourvèdre, and 5%
Grenache is not only full of cherry notes, but light, smooth, fruit forward and
quite refreshing. The first red on the menu is their 2018 Malbec. This Newsom
Vineyard sourced fruit is quite smooth with berry notes, well balanced, and has
good acids. This was followed by the
2021 Nichol which is a 50/50 blend of Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot. It is one
of the darker reds you’ll try and has jammy notes, lots of depth, and is very
smooth. Did someone say Cabernet Sauvignon? Well, their Columbia Valley sourced
Cab is delicious. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is big on black cherry, smooth,
and savory. However, brace yourself for the 2021 vintage! We got a “sneak peek”
of this bad beast Cab, and it just hits all those high marks of bold, lush,
long finish, and elegant. It’s a long-term cellaring wine for sure. For a take
on left/right bank style blend, try the Cuerno. Also sourced from Columbia
Valley, it’s a blend of 40% Merlot, 20% Malbec, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Call this jewel well balanced with a nice fruit forward sensation. And not to
be left out, is the 2020 Cabernet Franc from Calistoga. This big and heavy red
wine just explodes with a tantalizing mouthfeel, along with that classic pucker
up tannin sensation. Lastly, was the 2021 Muscat. Sourced from Farmhouse
Vineyards, it does have a beautiful aromatic nose with notes of grapefruit and
other delightful tropical sensations.
To
say the owners are enthusiastic about their place is an understatement. Take the opportunity to chat with them during
your tasting and you’ll get the A-to-Z about their passion for this place. There is a lot of great history packed into
their story, and the views are only complimented by the many species of birds
you’ll find on the estate. You’ll love their wines and fall in love with the
tasting room. So, plan a long visit here and take your time while you taste the
wine. Cheers!

Riesling – 2021; Vivac Winery; Dixon, New Mexico
Ever
try wine from New Mexico? Well, you should not be afraid to give it a try. About
half the Riesling fruit for this wine was sourced from their 1725 estate vineyard
for this lovely Riesling. The rest of the fruit was sourced from other New
Mexico vineyards and then blended with a “splash” of Malvasia and Abbott White.
This lovely white wine pours a pale-yellow color and almost immediately
envelopes the nose with floral notes. Those are accompanied by notes of apples
and pears predominantly, along with a bit of melon and some bright apricot. It has a solid acidity along with a hint of a
peppery finish. This is a solid go-to Riesling to enjoy. Cheers to Riesling
from New Mexico!

Mourvèdre Rosé – 2021; Parr Vineyards; Mason, Texas
Grapes
grown from this soon to be Hickory Sands AVA in the Texas Hill Country do not
disappoint. This Rosé, made from estate Mourvèdre fruit, is a relief to have
for those long, extended Texas summer days. Strawberry and apples dominate the
notes for this 2021 vintage along with some good floral aromas. It balances out
with medium acidity and an excellent mouthwatering finish. This Rosé
exemplifies some of the great Mason County fruit. It’s a true delight to sip on its own or
paired with simple summer meals. Cheers!

Petite Sirah -2019; French Connection Wines; Hye, Texas
Behold,
this lovely red wine is made from amazing Texas High Plains sourced fruit! It
is a fruit forward wine chock full of dark fruit notes with softer tannins. Add

the satisfying notes for this beauty. A lovely sipper. Santé!

Cheval 5 – 2010; Solaro Estate Winery; Dripping Springs, Texas
This
blend of Tempranillo 41%, Mourvèdre 19%, Ruby Cabernet 8%, and Barbera 5% is
not only well balanced, but has been maturing gracefully over the last 13
years. Not as much of the initial fruit sensation from the early days, but the
flavor profile is still intact. There is little color change, though you can
tell this is an older wine and happy the cork was well intact. Earthy
undertones are more prominent in this Texas red wine blend and the tannins are
sitting at about medium. It does have a very nice smooth finish to complement
your evening meal. Keep holding it if you’d like, but it is probably at its
peak now, so enjoy this one well!

Broken Hands – 2018; William Chris Vineyards; Hye, Texas
Pop
open this bold red beast and enjoy a soothing sipping session. This blend of 45%
Montepulciano, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Mourvèdre is well balanced for a
bold blend such as this. Cherries and blackberries will grab your attention on
the palate. This red blend has medium
acidity, and the tannins are a notch above moderate. Let this wine breathe a
bit before you enjoy it. This will initially be tight, but after sitting a bit,
you will notice this beauty continues to evolve over the course of your
evening. Cheers!

from the Texas High Plains AVA for this Texas take on a Bordeaux style blend of
Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This one has extra-long legs
and pours an enticing ruby red color with a tint of purple. Notes of dark cherry fruit will reach out and
tantalize your wine senses. Take a few
sips and repeat for that added sensation of black pepper and a touch of herbs
with coffee. There is some oak in there
as well plus a pinch of nutmeg for good measure. This full-bodied beast has
medium acidity and tannins and is also drinking well now. Go all out on a good
pairing with this luscious red wine and hold nothing back. You’ll love it! Santé!

Sweet Riesling – 2020; El Alamo Winery; Alcalde, New Mexico
This
estate wine is quite a nice find and of great quality. Though it’s labeled
sweet, it comes across more of a lighter sweet, but not quite semi. It pours a lovely light golden hue and has a heavenly
bouquet of citrus and apples. Take a few sips and enjoy those notes of apricot
and honeysuckle that delight the palate.
The acids are good in this white wine jewel with a great satisfying
finish. From aromas to flavors, all are excellent
and create a good way to experience that A to Z Riesling sensation. Cheers!

MTR – 2015; Robert Clay Vineyards; Mason, Texas
A field blend from some of the old estate vines, this
76-month barrel aged beast is one to be savored well. Equal parts of Merlot,
Touriga Nacional, and Ruby Cabernet comprise this majestic red wine. Let this
wine breathe for about an hour before sipping. You will notice even two hours
later that the tasting notes are continuing to evolve and develop for your
tasting pleasure. The pour is mostly ruby colored with notes of rich
blueberries filling the surrounding air. Red berries and a touch of violet are
mixed in there, as well. Call this one
medium bodied with good acidity that persists and polished tannins with a touch
of earthy undertones. It is still age
worthy and will pair nicely with your next festive meal. Cheers!
