The
sight of the light golden hue and moderate bubbles are the first impressions of
this Texas brut style sparkling wine. As this beauty “fizzes” down after the
first pour, you will experience aromas of apple and peach. This off-dry bubbly
is a blend of 80% Pinot Grigio and 20% Trebbiano with bright acidity and a
touch of minerality. There is a caramel finish along with the light and clean,
crisp feel. This is a great refresher to
go to for any time of day and pairs nicely with food, too. Cheers!
Wine Of The Moment is just that. A moment of trying out a new bottle of wine and sharing our thoughts and impressions. There is no planned wine bottle that is to be opened or set time that it will be tasted. It is what ever just happens to be opened...for the moment. On occasion, we may also post our feedback on new wineries that we have visited as well as unique cheeses. So, pull up your own plate of cheese, crackers, and fruit and enjoy these discussions.

delight to behold. Rich blackberries and dark cherries will be the dominate
notes to delight your wine senses. It’s got a smooth texture, moderate acids,
and a robust feel. A medium bodied

Ladrón Cellars – Englewood, Colorado
Having
been opened for just over a year, Ladrón Cellars is already making and
impressive impact in the local area. Owners Richard and Tracy Crocker have
started off making some quality reds and whites sourced from Paso Robles and
the Washington state area. Having gotten the “bug” from visiting other wineries
in Europe and New Zealand as well as wine owners and winemakers, Richard set
off getting some top-notch schooling in Washington. French for “thief”,
the winery’s name is a take on “grabbing” grapes from other states and
producing wines in Colorado. There is also a sister winery in Paso Robles that
they are partnering with called Emercy Wines. Richard is working on
sourcing grapes from Colorado vineyards to producing some great locally sourced
wines, as well. In addition, grapes are coming from the Red Mountain area and
Frenchman Hills. Most of the wines currently served are traditional Rhone
style, with other reds. There are a few whites to satisfy white wine lover
cravings, too. Initially selling wines at farmer’s markets, the couple are
happy to have a tasting room with fantastic ambiance and décor to ease you into
that relaxed wine tasting mood. Many of the bottles have unique artistic labels
from a local artist they have teamed with for the labels. There are currently
three wine flights to choose from for your tasting. We started off with a
new-to-be released Chardonnay sourced from Santa Maria Valley AVA. Partially
fermented in concrete, it hits the marks of a good Chardonnay. Most of
the wines we tried had grapes sourced from Paso Robles. The white blend 2019
Evidence is 65% Clairette Blanc and 35% Grenache Blanc. It is quite rich with
delicate notes on the front and mid palate. The 2016 Heist is their second wine
produced. It’s a blend of 50% Grenache, 42% Syrah, and 8% Petite Sirah. Even at
just 6 years old, it comes across as young with fruit forward jammy notes and a
traditional GSM like feel to it. Next was the 2016 Stowaway. Primarily Syrah
with 8% Petite Sirah, it has smoky and leathery notes, yet quite smooth with a
French like lean dry finish. Their Zinfandel blend is the 2019 Escape
Artist. A mix of 33% Zinfandel, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Syrah, and
11% Petite Sirah, this red beast hits the 15% plus abv mark and is well
balanced, has good structure, and teases you with notes of white pepper. Moving
on to bolder red wines, we kicked off with the 2020 Getaway. This 57%
Zinfandel, 24% Graciano, and 19% Syrah delights with a deep red hue, smoky
notes, and begs for some good BBQ! Cab lovers will appreciate the 2018 Vault.
Topped off with 10% Petite Sirah, it is more tannic than the previous reds with
notes of blackberries, a peppery feel, and a good mouth smacking ending to this
deep dark red wine. Following that bold red wine beast is the 2018
Cliffhanger. Blended with 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Syrah, 19%
Mourvèdre, and 17% Petite Sirah, it is a well-balanced red blend with notes of
pepper, fruit forward, and moderate acids. Lastly, is the 2018 Knuckles.
This Petite Sirah bold red wine has 8% Syrah and was aged in new and neutral
oak. It has a super dark color, expresses deep rich fruit flavors, and is one
to savor for a long time to come. There are also light red wine flights as well
with Grenache and Mourvèdre, but you certainly won’t go wrong with whatever one
you choose. You know there is nothing like trying out a newly opened winery to
absorb all that excitement and enthusiasm with everyone. The owners will
certainly make you feel warm and welcomed and if you time your visit just
right, the evening sunset on the tasting room is a blessed sight to
experience. Enjoy this winery when in the Denver area. Cheers!

Cardassian Kanar – NV; Star Trek Wines; Alpha Quadrant
Cardassian
Kanar – NV; Star Trek Wines; Alpha Quadrant
A
nod to one of Star Trek’s adversaries, this themed based wine is a take on a
drink revered by the Cardassians. According to some episode of Deep Space 9, it
was an “acquired” taste for all other aliens including humans. This 21st
century Terran take on this wine is an easy drinking red-wine blend. It is made
by the E2 Family Winery and sourced from Lodi AVA. The ABV is 14.6% and
balances out quite well with the tasting profile. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot. Although it does have a “left-bank”
feel to it, it is relatively easy on the palate. The unique spiral shaped
bottle is reminiscence of a style used in Europe way back when. As you pour, it
does have its own unique “glug glug” sound making this bottle a bit more
interesting both visually and to the ear. Call it a bottle with special
effects. Star Trek fans will also like the Cardassian “symbols” on the bottle,
as well. The bottle is a collectible and
keeper for sure. Enjoy!

what comprises this blend: 43% Mourvèdre, 10% Carignon, 14% Cinsault, 25%
Grenache, 4% Syrah, and 4% Petit Sirah.
It pours a bright plum-tinged ruby hue with aromas of plums and cherries
immediately on the nose. There is also a little bit of smoke to compliment that
aromatic profile. Flavors of strawberry and blueberry dominate this very fruit
forward beauty followed by cocoa and a lingering caramel finish. Nice bright acids
and well-balanced tannins round out this medium bodied red wine. All it takes
is one sip and you will be hooked for more of this crave worthy jewel. Enjoy
well!

Gewurztraminer – 2020; Grgich Hills Estate; Rutherford, California
This
inaugural release of Miljenko’s Gewurztraminer is quite floral on the nose and
palate with notes of honey and jasmine. Sourced from Napa Valley AVA, the
straw-colored pour fills the air with citrus and delicate peach scents. This
off-dry white wine will dazzle your anxious tastebuds with papaya and figs,
too. There is a touch of minerality in
there along with the slightest effervescence and the tiniest of bubbles, with a
crisp finish for the finale. Enjoy!

Petite Sirah – 2017; Bending Branch Winery; Comfort, Texas
Here
is another great Texas 2017 to cherish.
Sourced from Newsom Vineyards, the deep, dark purple hue might initially
trick your brain into thinking that this might be a heavy red. Before you take
that initial sip, breathe in those notes of currant and plum first. Next notice the lovely aromas of red cherries
followed by a bit of coffee. Take a sip or two and you will be surprised how
smooth and elegant this Petite Sirah is. Go ahead and wrap those tastebuds
around that licorice sensation along with a bit of vanilla. There is also some cocoa and tobacco to round
out that tasting profile. You will also experience a long medium finish, as well.
Call this red wine medium bodied and enjoy with your favorite feast. It is food
pairing worthy. Cheers!

Coral Estrellas Sparkling Rosé – 2019; Siboney Cellars; Johnson City, Texas
This
first bubbly by Siboney Cellars will not disappoint! Made in the “Pet-Nat”
style, they took Sangiovese grapes sourced from the Texas High Plains AVA and
using the oldest sparkling wine making methods, let nature take care of the
rest. Popping the crown-cap seal releases that ever so subtle “pop” that is
music to the ears followed by some fizzing bubbles that signal the party and
celebration is about to begin. No worries on any geysers opening this one,
served chilled and the only gusher will be how much you pour in your
glass. It is bright pink in color with light
acidity. The tantalizing little bubbles
will certainly entertain your palate, as well. Even at three years old, this
young style sparkling is drinking well. Pull up a chair as this wine is
certainly one worthy of both celebratory events as well as a casual evening star
watching parties and perfect for food pairings. Cheers!

Cuvée du Ruisseau – 2017; Calais Winery; Hye, Texas
Clocking
in at 15.1% ABV, this Texas High Plains sourced Merlot is extraordinary. Chalk
it up to the fantastic year that 2017 was for Texas grapes, but also for some
fantastic winemaking skills. The dark
ruby color is an eye catcher to watch when pouring but do let it sit about 45
minutes or so and just enjoy the ever-changing aromas of blackberry and
currant. Take some sips and let your
palate relish this medium plus mouthfeel jewel.
Those figs start to delight your tastebuds along with hints of vanilla
and spice. Acids may be a bit higher than most Merlots, but nothing a good
proper feast pairing can’t balance out.
The tannins are about a notch below moderate and yes, there is some
sediment in the bottle for you hard core red wine lovers! This beautiful red
wine is one to savor, so enjoy well. Santé!

well-aged Malbec is settling in quite nicely for your wine sipping

still quite opaque and most of the fruity notes are dominated by luscious
plums. Flavors of apricot will greet you
on that initial sip followed by a touch of oak.
Strong tannins are still holding on, so be prepared for a good mouth
gripping feel. You might also discern a little earthiness in there, too. It is a great pleasure trying out this Malbec
from the west coast. Enjoy!

Chardonnay – 2020; Adega Vinho Winery; Stonewall, Texas
One
sip of this beauty and you just might swear up and down that you are in
Chardonnay heaven. What may seem like an unlikely place for a great Chardonnay
is only a preconceived notion. Sourced from Texas Hills Vineyard of the Texas
Hill Country AVA, this “David” went toe-to-toe with some mighty “Goliaths” at
the San Francisco Wine Competition and came out as a double gold winner. Yes…for real! However, do not let some fancy
wine competition be the sole reason that seduces you into drinking this fine
wine. Try it yourself and let your wine senses do the talking. The “secret” to this fantastic beast? Well,
the public secret is that it’s sourced from old 1995 Texas vines (which can be
a scarce quality fruit) and cellared on the lees. The result is a full bodied and bold white
wine that exceeds expectations. This
Texas Chardonnay vintage has light buttery notes along with a touch of lemon
zest and green apples. The acids are bright, and the touch of vanilla is just
right. With an ever so slightly creamy
finish, what is truly not to love here?
Drink more Texas wine and “Cheers” to everyone who had a hand in making
of this wine, it is outstanding!

not to like and enjoy about a good Riesling? This light golden colored treat is
rich in notes of pears, apples, and peaches.
It is both sharp, sweet, and complex.

Arroyo Blanco – 2018; Lost Draw Cellars; Fredericksburg, Texas
The
Arroyo Blanco has been one of those reliable yet surprising blends from Lost
draw to savor. The 2018 vintage is a blend of Albariño 72% and Muscat 28%. The mild
pale-yellow shade is eye catching, but the tropical notes on the nose really
capture your attention. Apples and pears compliment the aromatic nose of this
beauty. After taking that first sip, you will taste good acidity and a touch of
minerality. It is quite crisp and has a
clean finish. A sip of this will certainly put you in that tropical beach side
food pairing mood. Cheers!

Andorian Blue – NV; Star Trek Wines; Earth, UFP
This
Star Trek themed wine pays homage to one of the classic alien races that were
part of the original founders of the United Federation of Planets. This wine boldly goes with a vibrant
turquoise color. The Andorian race were…well, blue skinned, hence why the wine has
a similar color. This wine is sourced from Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in
California. A dye was used to give the color
tint to this white wine which does not seem to mar the tasting profile. So, how does this “alien” wine hold up to Terran
tastebuds? It is good. The wine was aged about 12 months before
bottling, so it has had a decent time to “sit”.
This Chardonnay hits the 14.2% abv mark with primary notes of citrus and
apricot. It has a classic clean, fresh,
and long finish. With the higher price point, you are paying for the sci-fi
theme more so than the wine, but the raised UFP bottle emblem makes it a keeper.
Not sure what the Andorian word is for cheers, but drink with your favorite
alien friends and enjoy!

Cabernet Franc – 2013; Compass Rose Cellars; Hye, Texas
You never know what “blast from the past” will be discovered in our cellar. Surprise, surprise, we found this nine-year-old Cabernet Franc from Compass Rose that not only shows great aging potential but is still retaining great flavors. Decant this wine for about an hour or more for full enjoyment. Notes of plums are most pronounced along with some cherries and a touch of smoke. Relish in those red cherry sensations, as well, and don’t be surprised when that touch of vanilla kicks in. This medium bodied red wine has moderate tannins and will also present a bit of leather to mingle in. You could probably keep longer and see what surprises unfold later, but we can happily report that it is drinking well now. Alas, the winery is no longer in business, but if you are still cellaring any of these bottles, they appear to be aging nicely. Cheers!

"The Circle" Field Blend – 2017; Reddy Vineyards; Brownfield, Texas
Behold
this fantastic field blend from their 360-degree vineyard plot! This Texas High
Plains AVA fruit is a mix of Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Carignane, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, and Tannat. These grapes
were not only harvested together, but they were co-fermented together to
produce this unique style of red wine blend. Clocking in at 14.7% abv, let’s
see how this old-world style stacks up.
How does it look? A very dark rich crimson color is visually pleasing as
you prepare for that initial sip. How does it smell? It is very fruit forward
with black cherries, strawberries, and cranberries. How does it taste? It is ultra-smooth with soft tannins. You
will discern figs and tobacco notes in there in addition to the big bold berry
fruits. This medium bodied wine has moderate acidity and kicks in just a touch
of oak for the finish. We think you will
thoroughly enjoy this special treat, so stock up and enjoy well. One of our
favorites we have sipped this year. Cheers!

this lovely white wine. Outstanding to sip on its own or pair with food. You

discernable mingled with a touch of spice. An underlying earthiness adds that
extra dimension to the profile that is soul satisfying. The tannins are still
holding quite firmly for this full-bodied red along with bright acids. It is still a great bottle to cellar for many
more years if you have some. Of course, there is also nothing wrong with
enjoying a bottle now to make notes to compare with a future tasting
opportunity either. Cheers!

The Oracle – 2015; Miner Family Winery; Napa California
Behold….
The Oracle. This legendary label brand
from Miner has always had a solid reputation for some fantastic Bordeaux style
blends. The 2015 vintage is their 20th
anniversary release. Marking this
special occasion is an elegant blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Merlot 26%,
Cabernet Franc 13%, Malbec 3%, and Petit Verdot 3%. Sourced from Stagecoach Vineyard, this Napa
Valley AVA fruit pours with a dark garnet color and fills the air with a lovely
bouquet of dark cherries. Add raspberries to your note list along with some
leather and tobacco. Hanging in there at 14.6% abv, the high alcohol content
blends in quite nicely with those flavors of blackberries and plums, too. You
will be pleased with the silkiness and the underlying earthiness of this medium
bodied red wine. The tannins will firmly envelop your palate as you note that light
peppery finish. This red blend jewel certainly has great structure and is very
well balanced. This lovely wine is worthy of hanging out a bit longer in the
cellar. Let’s see how it drinks in the coming years. Cheers!

La Cuvee du Manoir – Reserve – 2015; Calais Winery; Hye, Texas
Made
from some “ancient” Texas vines from Newsom Vineyards of the Texas High Plains
AVA, this 46-month aged Tempranillo is more than worth the wait. It bleeds or rather pours a deep blood red
color, and you can almost instantly smell the aromas of blackberry and dark
plum with a little tobacco on the nose. You will probably want to decant for
two hours for optimal experience, but after waiting this long that’s a blink of
an eye. Those deep fruit flavors are something to savor! As you relish the
mouthfeel and notes, you may discern a little nutmeg on the finish for this
full-bodied beast. Sadly, these old vines are no more, so cherish what you
have. With great textures and bold acids, full indulgence is recommended for
this outstanding Texas Tempranillio. This is still cellaring nicely if you have
bottles. Santé!

L'Elvira Spumante Brut – NV; L'Elvira; Italy
Just
the sight of these fine bubbles during the pour is a sign of great things to
come for this Italian bubbly. In addition to the “fizz” visual effects, the air
will fill with the delicate essence of honey.
Green apples and a little bit of ripe grapefruit will excite your palate
as you sip and enjoy every “ahhh” moment. This is not the sweet version, but a
lovely slightly dry, crisp, elegant, and very refreshing bottle. Simply stated,
this is an excellent Spumante sipper to enjoy all day for any meal, or on its
own. Cin Cin!

Buffalo Roam – 2017; Brennan Vineyards; Comanche, Texas
This
red wine blend has always been a rock-solid go-to Texas wine for your favorite
BBQ feast. 2017 certainly added to the
intensely rich flavors of this vintage and does not disappoint your wine
senses. At 5 years old, it pours with a
lighter red hue than previous releases and still packs some good fruit forward
notes. Aromas of plum and strawberry are
most pronounced for this 50/50 Mourvèdre-Syrah blend. It’s smooth on the palate with a silky finish
for this dry beast. There is a bit of
spice in there, as well. Tannins are about medium for optimal enjoyment. Your
outdoor meaty dish awaits and will be delighted with this as a pairing…enjoy!

Carménère – 2012; Root 1; Colchagua, Chile
Ahh…!
It’s always a pleasure to enjoy this “lost grape” wine. Even at 10 years old, this Chilean wine is
still holding strong. Perhaps the screw cap did its magic after all. Red fruit aromas are still intact with a hint
of smoke. Flavors of raspberries, plums,
and blackberries seem to be equally balanced. This medium bodied red wine has a
bit of leather in there that lingers while the acids are mild. It is a great
start to finish wine. Enjoy!

Sangiovese Grande Reserve – 2015; Robert Clay Vineyards; Mason, Texas
So,
how is this seven year old RCV Texas Sangiovese holding up? Like their 2015
Merlot, nothing short of greatness! As the only wine made with grapes not
sourced from their estate vineyard, this is a rare and unique jewel to savor.
Sourced from Mandola Vineyards of the Texas Hill Country AVA, winegrower Dan
McLaughlin came across this fruit as a trade for Touriga National, and oh what
a trade that was. He just might have come out on top with this deal. You will need
to allow this bottle some time to unpack and relax for a couple of hours to
fully appreciate the complexity of flavors it has, so have some patience. Note that it is unfiltered, so you will be
getting all the good stuff and the true essence of this wine (aka sediment).
After that first pour, you might wonder how a Texas Sangiovese can have such a
deep dark purple hue. That is the magic of estate ruby cabernet skins being co-fermented
with the Sangiovese juice. You may also
notice as you pour that initial glass that it is filled with a bold fruity
bouquet. And yes, this wine does have a high alcohol content – 15.7% abv! Sip, swirl, and repeat, then you will be
hooked on the massive fruit flavors of deep rich cherries, a bit of plum and
rich raisin that this sophisticated beauty has to offer. The acids are moderate, and the tannins are
still holding quite firm. This wine is still
young and that may be a surprise to most Texas wine fans, given its age. There are still many years left until we see

MaNavi – 2017; Silk Road Wines; Georgia
Ah….
Enjoying the classic origin of wine grapes is always a treat. This Georgian dry
white wine is crafted from the Mtsvane grape. It has a very light-yellow color
and fills the air with aromas of citrus and apricots. There is a little bit of honey scent on the
nose, just before you take that initial sip.
The pleasing flavor of apples dance across the palate with a respectable
amount of minerality. There is a bit of
tartness on the finish, but nothing to dissuade you from taking additional sips
as you continue to enjoy this light and refreshing old world beauty. This white
wine is best enjoyed chilled on a hot summer day and pairs nicely with food and
your favorite pool side setting. Enjoy!

Trebbiano – 2019; Duchman Family Winery; Driftwood, Texas
Ahh…
nothing like a good refreshing chilled Trebbiano to pair with some summer fish
dishes! Sourced from Bingham Family Winery of the Texas High Plains AVA, this
white wine is full of tropical notes especially lime. Apples and pears will
also round out the tasting profile. The
acids are big and there is light oak on this one with the slightest bit of
effervescence. The finish has a touch of
rosemary for an added twist. This
Trebbiano did win the double gold 2021 San Francisco International Wine
Competition, so hats off for that. It is drinking well now, but it would not
hurt to try another bottle in a couple of years and see what happens. Enjoy!

Tannat EM – 2013; Bending Branch Winery; Comfort, Texas
Nothing
like a big, bold, and beautiful Tannat to ease the tension from your day! Sourced from Bella Collina Vineyards of the
Pasa Robles AVA, this extended maceration version of this Tannat presents an
elegant, smooth and complex red wine.
Notes of apples and cola entice the nose initially just before you take
that anticipated first sip. Some wonderful cranberries will envelop your palate
followed by beautiful rich spices. The low acids and fine finish absolutely add
to the approachability of this robust beauty. This is drinking nicely now, however,
it can still cellar for a while and continue to evolve in the coming years. A
fabulous wine to pair with food. Cheers!

Sauvignon Blanc – 2019; Reddy Vineyards; Brownfield, Texas
This
single block pick from the Texas High Plains AVA estate vineyard will quickly
put you in that tropical Zen zone. The light golden color will contrast well
with your imagined turquoise waters as you dream of a blissful destination to
be enjoying this summer sipping beauty.
That first sip packs a lot of tropical fruit notes especially pineapple
and grapefruit. Your palate will also
relish a hint of banana with a touch of cream.
This white wine has good acids and a mean pear finish with a bit of
lemon zest. A lot of surprises in this bottle and much to enjoy. Hope you have
one left in your cellar to enjoy, because we sure did like this one. Cheers!

Adoration – 2018; Heath Sparkling Wine; Fredericksburg, Texas
With
a lovely rose-pink hue and delicate bubbles, this blend of 88% Pinot Noir and
12% Chardonnay is certainly a bolder sparkling and refreshing option. Less than 1% residual sugar is in this bubbly
treat. As you let it “fizz”, you will discern
notes of strawberry and raspberry along with bit of herbs. Apple flavors will
delight your palate as well. That tingling
finish is great, and there is a touch of balsamic afterwards. The acids are very
solid for this Texas sparkling. Cheers!

Clairette Blanche - 2020; Ab Astris Winery; Stonewall, Texas
The
wines made from the estate grapes of Ab Astris have been perhaps one of the
most eagerly awaited ones in the Hill County.
Behold their Clairette Blanche! Pick your favorite astonishing words,
but “wow”, “man”, and “OMG” are just the beginning of descriptions of this
lovely white wine. If their tasting room
smelled like this grape, you may not ever leave. By the way, if the winery sold
a candle that smelled like this wine, it would be a repeat buy. A lovely bouquet of apple and apricot will
certainly delight your nose. Follow that with bright apple, rich flavors of
melon and papaya and you know that this white wine jewel is one to savor with
every sip. Add to those tasting sensations a touch of minerality and you know
you have a winner in your glass. This
white wine just might be your “best friend” to hide out with through the Texas
summer. Cheers!

Sangiovese – 2018; Kuhlman Cellars; Stonewall, Texas
Perfectly
well-balanced Sangiovese wines are a jewel to savor! This Newsom Vineyards
sourced Brunello clone fruit from the Texas High Plains AVA should be in your
top 10 Sangiovese picks. Light red in color, this dry red wine greets you with
a touch of tobacco on the nose as you take that initial sip. That is followed by lush cherries and plums that
delight in this great winner for your next Italian style dish. This Sangiovese is perfectly balanced in tannins,
acids, and fruit for this medium bodied wine. There is also a little vanilla on
the finish for good measure. As a gold medal winner of the International
Women's Wine Competition, it’s no wonder you will keep reminiscing about this
wine after the bottle is empty. Simply stunning and we believe our favorite all
time Sangiovese yet. So elegant and refined. A true gem. Salute!

Thieves On the Promenade – 2017; William & Chris Wines; Hye, Texas
This
mystery red blend just might surprise you in more ways than one. As part of the
winemaker series, you just never know what might be created based on
inspiration or experimentation. The 2017
vintage certainly contributed nicely to this delicious red wine blend. At
first, you will notice that the color is quite opaque as you let it breathe for
about an hour. This beauty needs some time to unfold and unpack all it has to
offer. On the nose, this one has a lot of different fruit aromas to offer with plum,
blackberry, and little bit of strawberry being the primary notes. The tannins
and structure are quite strong for this very dry wine and the acids are on the
high side, too. Given that it is also a heavy bodied wine, pick your favorite
big bold red wine food pairing and feast away. It is worth your cellar room
storage to save and sample again in a few years, as well. You’ll be very
delighted with this lovely bottle and really liked the unique artwork as well. Cheers
and well done!

Texas Port – 2005; Kiepersol Estates Winery; Tyler, Texas
Going
way back when to the early days of Kiepersol, this initial 2005 vintage port is
still holding up quite well. A blend of Cabernet,
Merlot and Syrah, it not only still maintains its strength, but also presents rich
notes of raspberry and blackberry. The diverse flavors also shine with dried
fruit and chocolate in there to delight the palate. At 18.5% abv, there is no chance of being
unhappy with this after dinner pleaser.
Save your best balsamic or merlot cheese for a great after dinner pairing.
A lovely evening sipper worth every delicious drop. Cheers!

Kfire Winery & Vineyard – Bertram, Texas
This
hidden gem on the western side of US HWY 183 in Bertram is worth your wine
trekking travel stop. Owners Gail and
Kenny Fowler opened their tasting room five years ago. Long time Texas wine
fans might remember them from the Lakeway Winery at the Oasis. Retired
firefighter, Kenny, developed the theme for the winery and the décor with firefighter
paraphernalia such has a fire hydrant out front, and interior walls decorated
with fire patches, helmets and even some firehoses curled up on the floor. Not to mention that many of the wines’ names
are firefighter related. Their grapes and juice are sourced from the Texas High
Plains as well as from other areas across the state. There is an A-to-Z selection from white, rosé,
red, and sweet wines. On this visit, we started off with the two whites on the
menu, both of which will help quench a very hot Texas summer thirst. The Viognier is dry and crisp with a bit of
oak on the nose. The 2019 Engine 12 is a
Rhone style blend of Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne. It is very well
balanced and floral with some citrus notes and a bit of oak on the finish. The
Rescue Rosé is Cinsault based and will fill your palate with fresh ripe strawberry
and black currant flavors - a wine great to sip or pair with a variety of food
options. For the reds, we started with the Engine 39. This red beast is a
Barbera with rich cherry and blackberry notes and a hint of vanilla. The wine
had good tannins and acids (should pair nicely with meaty pasta dishes). We
tried the Cabernet Franc called The Specialist. Cherry and plums dominated this red gem. Most
everyone knows how dominant Tempranillo is in Texas wineries and the 2019 Ignite
is their take on this Texas varietal. It is quite bold, with firm tannins,
bright acids, and plum aromas with a bit of nut on the finish. Bring on your
best ribeye with that monster! For the
sweet wines, check out the Cadet. It has
a rhubarb flavor with strawberry bouquet and makes a light sweet summer
sipper. For port lovers, they save the
best for last with the Extinguisher. Twelve years in the making (part barrel and
bottle aged), this crown jewel is rich in pecan, caramel, and dried fruit. On
the horizon, they should be releasing a Sangiovese in the future. With a very
nice quiet setting in the country overlooking the vineyard, this is a good spot
for chilling and sipping. Check them out when in the area or planning a wine
outing and be on the lookout for their food wine dinners. Always a treat to
find new wineries and tasting rooms, so explore and enjoy!

Super Texan – 2012; Flat Creek Estate Winery & Vineyard; Marble Falls, Texas
A
decade later, this Texas Sangiovese blend is still holding up quite well.
Little color change is noticeable, and the aromas of blueberries and cherries
are still intact. Plum is the dominate fruit profile now along with a touch of
spice on the palate. The acids are still
holding well for this medium bodied red jewel plus you will get some distinct earthiness
in there for good measure. It still holds a nice long finish for extra sipping pleasure.
No reason not to keep longer if you have
some. Cin Cin!

Marsanne – 2019; French Connection Wines; Hye, Texas
Aged
15 months on the lees, their first release of this single varietal really
shines with enticing aromas and long-lasting flavors. Sourced from the Texas
High Plains AVA, this straw colored Marsanne has intense aromatics of lime and
orange initially followed by pear. As
you take those first few sips, be prepared for a big mouthful of peach flavors
along with some raisins. There is a
touch of cinnamon in there, as well, along with moderate acidity. It’s quite a delightful sipper and it is
refreshing. Feel free to repeat the next day.
Santé!

Mourvèdre – 2013; Lewis Wines; Johnson City, Texas
2013…ugh! A very late spring frost in Texas did not
bring high hopes for that year’s crop, but what did come through was some
excellent fruit. This Texas High Plains
sourced Mourvèdre from Lost Draw Vineyards is not only aging well but drinking nicely
right now. The color of the pour is a
light red hue, and you will immediately discern a lovely cherry bouquet with a
bit of pepper. Savor that first sip and
brace yourself for some big plum flavors mingled with a bit of cranberry. There is a slight silky texture to it
followed by a lingering long finish. You
could probably cellar this vintage a couple more years or so, but why wait when
it is tasting so great now? Plus, your barbeque is begging for this pairing.
Cheers!
